This is a Monday to Friday course comprising theoretical and practice-
oriented training in drug metabolism, disposition and safety, with special
emphasis on modern high-throughput aspects. The programme will start in the morning of Monday May 26, at 09.00 (Sunday, May 25 registration), and it will end on Friday, May 30, at 15.30.

Background
The EUFEPS Committee on Industrial Relations (CIR) initiated this
Course. Six successful Courses were previously given in 2002 - 2007. It is
concentrated to five full teaching days, including lectures, demonstrations and case discussions and organised in collaboration with the LACDR-Section of Molecular Toxicology, Department of Pharmacochemistry, Vrije Universiteit (VU-University), Amsterdam NL.

Goals and participants
Specific goals of the Course include:

  • To learn to critically evaluate the basic concepts of HT technologies in drug metabolism/disposition
  • To learn the possibilities but also the limitations of HT-drug metabolism/ disposition technologies in daily practices
  • To stimulate interdisciplinary learning of HT drug metabolism/disposition
  • To stimulate research in and applications of HT drug metabolism/disposition
  • To prepare new industrial and academic recruits better to meet the challenges of HT technologies in drug metabolism/disposition

More general goals of the Course are:

  • To increase the general standard of the use of HT technologies in drug metabolism/disposition
  • To attract long term funding for a permanent training centre in HT drug
    metabolism/ disposition
  • To attract investments in HT drug metabolism/disposition technologies in academia, thereby improving the facilities for (undergraduate/graduate/PhD) training of future employees in industry and academia

Those who should attend include:

  • Post-doctoral/advanced PhD (or equal) level attendees from industry, CROs and innovative equipment and instrument manufacturers, as well as from academia
  • Those working in pharmaceutical, bio-technological, bio-analytical, agro/fine chemical fields and in (bio)informatics
  • Maximum 25 participants

International Scientific & Planning Committee
Chair:
Bernd Clement, Kiel DE

Additional Members:
Leo de Leede, Leiden NL
Rodolfo Gasser, Basel CH,
Barry Jones, Sandwich UK
Hans H. Lindén, Stockholm SE
Han van de Waterbeemd, Macclesfield, UK

Course Leaders:
Nico P.E. Vermeulen
Jan N.M. Commandeur, Amsterdam NL

Aim and Programme
The specific aim of the Course is:

  • To update the participants (with different backgrounds) on basic theory and concepts of drug metabolism/disposition and its role in drug discovery, drug development and safety assessment
  • To provide the participants with a balanced theoretical background on the latest developments of HT approaches and technologies in the field

MThe general format of the Course includes 2 –3 speakers (theory) per day and invited HT-equipment / technology providers presenting, during 2 hrs sessions, interactively, their own equipment / technology and demonstration material. There will be ample time for interaction, practical case studies and discussions led by the Course Leaders. A comprehensive Course Manual containing copies and relevant background material will be provided as well as a CD-rom containing lectures, cases and other relevant data.
