Scope and aim
This conference is the second in the series on Optimising Drug Delivery and Formulation initiated in 2003 in Versailles. Due to the success of the EUFEPS/APGI cooperation in the organisation of 2003 conference on New Challenges in Drug Delivery, it has been decided to hold this scientific event regularly. The topic of this year focuses on the tools which can be employed to better characterise and evaluate the different drug delivery systems at all stages of their creation, from the first concepts in designing the delivery systems, to the assessment of the formulation progress and the control of the final medicine.

The main objectives of this conference are not only to give tools for a safer and more efficient formulation, but also to present new physico-chemical techniques, which can be used in this perspective.
The evaluation can deal with:

  • The progress of formulation at its different stages
  • The assessment of dermal, epithelial, tissular, cellular, nuclear permeation
  • The study of excipient, conjugate and drug delivery system characteristics, bioavailability, absorption, safety, stability, etc.
  • All the physico-chemical and biological techniques used for such assessments: microspcopic, thermal, spectral, rheological, and structural studies as well as cell cultures.

Key Topics and Issues

  • How can in silico methods drive valuable formulation?
  • To what extent can in vitro methods be accepted by health authorities?
  • What are the key points to control in drug delivery systems for the different routes?
  • Are there true new technologies or only up-dated methods?
  • Are the in vitro/in vivo correlations pure utopia?
  • What alternatives to in vivo studies?
  • New cell lines for specific assays.

Breakout Sessions
There will be a number of breakout sessions. Examples of topics are:
I Optimising predictive evaluation tests
II Cell models simulating biological tissues

Oral and Poster contributions
Scientific contributions relating to the conference scope and aim will be welcome and considered either for oral or poster presentations.
Oral contributions will be selected among all the contribution abstracts received. They will focus more specifically on the evaluation (at any level of the formulation) of drug delivery systems, including three administration routes, i.e. oral/gastro-intestinal, dermal/transdermal and mucosal, as well as on carrier systems. The registration fee will be waived for the main author (speaker) of the selected oral contributions.
Abstracts should be submitted to the EUFEPS Secretariat, both as an e-mail attachment and as a hard copy with indication of a wish for oral presentation. Submission deadline is October 1, 2005.

Exhibition
Companies are invited to exhibit at the Conference. For information on layout, costs, etc., as well as an exhibition registration form, please contact the EUFEPS Secretariat or the APGI Secretariat. Special discount will be allowed to companies having already exhibited at PharmSciFair. (www.pharmscifair.org).

Language
English will be the language of the Conference. No simultaneous translation will be provided.

Organiser
EUFEPS was founded in 1991. Its mission is to advance excellence in the pharmaceutical sciences and innovative drug research and to represent the interests of scientists engaged in drug research and development, drug regulation and drug policymaking. Currently, it links 24 Member Societies in 24 countries. In addition, there are Individual Members of EUFEPS.
